Dangerous Dogs
Any dog that causes a serious injury to a person or domestic animal or has been designated as a potentially dangerous dog and engages in behavior that poses a threat to public safety will be required to satisfy the requirements for registration of a potentially dangerous dog.
Contact City Hall for ordinance on Vicious or Noisy Dogs (City Code 5-4B-7)
Rabies Control
It is unlawful to have any dog or cat, more than 6 months old, within the City without having a rabies vaccination.
Running At Large
It is unlawful for the owner or guardian of any dog or cat to permit the dog or cat to run at large within the limits of the city. The term “at large” means any dog or cat out of doors in any place, unless the dog or cat is on a leash held by a person able to control the dog or cat. A dog or cat may be left unattended out of doors in a yard with a fence that prevents the dog or cat from leaving the yard, or fastened to a leash, chain or rope keeps the dog or cat at least 10 feet from a public street, alley, public place or within 6 feet of any other boundary of the property the dog or cat is so fastened on.
Impoundment
It is the duty of the public service office and the police department to impound all dogs or cats found running at large in the streets, alleys and public places of the City, whether they have a license tag or not.
During the 72-hour period following impoundment of animals, the owner or guardian of the animal may get the release of the animal from the public service officer by paying the license fee of the animal, plus $20.00, at City Hall, for the first time that the animal is impounded. For the second impoundment of the same animal, the fee is $30.00. For the third or any subsequent impoundment of the same animal, the fee is $40.00. Additionally, the owner or guardian will be charged a fee of $5.00 for each day impounded (full or partial) for the care of the animal, plus any cost of vaccinating or immunizing the animal against rabies.
